This course is designed to guide absolute beginners through the essential techniques of pottery or those looking to refresh their skills.

Classes run on Thursday evenings for 2 hours per week (18:30-20:30) from 1st October 2026. You’ll move from exploring clay by hand-building to learning the foundations of wheel-throwing, trimming, and glazing.

By the end of the course, if you attend all dates, you can expect to have made a selection of ceramics through different methods, and will have crafted your own unique pieces and experienced the magic of transforming clay into finished ceramics, and will be ready to progress to our Continued Practice course, should you want to continue with your practice.

Expect a relaxed, supportive atmosphere with plenty of time for experimentation. Whilst everyone works at their own pace, with guidance, generally, we will follow the lesson plan as below:

Course overview
Week 1 01/10: Induction, and introduction to the studio and clay. Starting hand-building

Week 2 08/10: Hand-building continued

Week 3 15/10: Introduction to the pottery wheel

Week 4 22/10: Pottery wheel continued practice, and refining items by trimming
Week 5 29/10: Practice techniques learnt, refining previous pieces made with opportunity to create a small project piece (hand-building or pottery wheel).

Week 6 05/11: Continue project pieces, and glazing items ready so far.

If you're not able to attend a scheduled session which you know about at the time of booking, you may be able to attend another class which runs concurrently to Thursday's group (subject to bookings).

If you cancel a session late (there is a 24 hour cancellation period), I will be able to help you catch up on techniques during the remaining sessions of your course where time allows. Missed sessions due to late cancellations cannot be rescheduled or replaced.

Class size: A maximum of 5 participants.

If fewer than 3 people book five days before the start date, you'll be offered an alternative date or a full refund.

Location:
Wellington Yard, L15 4JH
Further information about where to find the studio will be shared in the days before your course.

Payment:
Payment can be made via an instalment plan of 2 or 3 payments. Email me for more details; hello@rmostudio.com

Other info:

  • Ceramics can be surprisingly physical. You will need a reasonable amount of dexterity in your hands, as well as good grip strength. If you have any uncertainties about this, please get in touch before booking.
  • Courses are for ages 16+, although I'm working on options for the young creatives!
Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
  • For anything not glazed in the final session (including work not yet through it's first firing), you will pick one of the studio glazes and studio staff will glaze work for you. Alternatively, you can book a Studio Access session to do this yourself (cost applies).
  • Once glazed and fired after your final session, items will be available to collect from the workshop location. This usually takes 2 weeks but await an email from me with further information.
  • Finished items will be kept for 14 days and disposed of if not collected. This is due to having limited space within the studio, with my own and students' work added at all times. Items will be held over studio closure periods.
  • Once a course has been purchased, I will email you in the week prior to the session with additional information.
  • Please view and familiarise yourself with refund and cancellation information at www.rmostudio.com/workshops/studiorefundpolicy

Photography & Recording

You're welcome to take a few quick photos or short video clips of your own work for personal use or social media, provided it doesn't disrupt the class or capture other participants without their permission.

To protect the learning experience and everyone's privacy, recording substantial parts of a class, audio recording, livestreaming, or using wearable recording devices (including Meta smart glasses) is not permitted.
